Undoubtedly, the 2016 model year can be considered the best year for Mini Cooper reliability. Powerful brakes paired with nimble handling make this one of the most fun cars money can buy. This model has plenty of power under the hood as well. The power is produced by a four-cylinder engine.
There were no longer the Chrysler 1.6 engines but come from BMW in cooperation with PSA that developed a new engine lineup. These new engines were of the same displacement but more cost-effective and efficient than their predecessors. The base 1.6 engine was used in the Mini Cooper and this engine has produced 118hp and 114 lb-ft of torque.

That is, if the timing chain breaks or jumps off, would the top of the pistons hit the valves as they open? I have seen a few engines destroyed by this design. OTOH, they did not have timing chains, but belts.

I know PSA worked with Ford on may engines (since 1998 according to wiki) including the 2.7 and 3.0 V6 diesel in the modern jags.

I took my wifes 08 Mini one 1.4 Petrol in today for MOT and its failed. A couple of bulbs and and broken headlight adjuster (which i'll repair) but more annoyingly its failed pretty badly on emissions: Exhaust emissions lambda reading after 2nd fast idle outside specified limits (7.3.d.3)
The early 1.6 d MINIs 2008 ,2009 and 2010 are Peugeot engines and have a timing belt .They are easy to tell from the latter BMW engine on the style of the cover is double on the BM engine a much smaller cover on the Pug engine .Mine has done 140000 miles and still running very well.
